One of the banes of playing the bandura is the fact that most bandurists use their nails to obtain a nice sound. However the nails tend to break and can be unreliable.
Veresai used a peice of birch or a feather which he put in a ring to help him play. This was apparently only on one finger.
In the post war period in Ukraine they used a flattened wire shaped to the shape of the finger nail which was held at the end of the finger tip with a thin brass ring.
In the 1970's Professor Herasymenko developed plastic nails which beacme standard in the 70's
However there are differences in the length and shape of the nails. In Lviv they tend to be longer than the length used in Kyiv.
For Kharkiv bandura playing these nails have to be even shorter.
