I was wondering if the bandura is a difficult instrument to learn?
My husband is of Ukrainian heritage and we are raising our family with many Ukrainian traditions. Our 5 children were involved in a Ukrainian dance group where we lived previously, and I've been interested in learning the bandura for a number of years now. Unfortunately where we now live, there is no Ukrainian Club, let alone any bandurists I could ask to teach me. I may have the option of getting help from a bandurist a couple of times a year when we go to the mainland (we live in Tasmania, Australia), but I would really be on my own.
I have a background in playing many different instruments over the years, though have been out of it for a dozen years while having children. Now my youngest is off to school and I'll have more time, I'd like to start back with playing something again and would like a challenge. Of the many instruments I have played, I did learn cello for a number of years, so know a bit about strings, and I've no worried with reading music and theory etc, but how would I learn technique? Are there any books out there that teach bandura technique in English, as I'm still at beginner level in Ukrainian?
I'm wanting to research a bit more about how I could go about this before I take the plunge and purchase an instrument. Also, what would be the best type of bandura to start on? I believe there are a number of types. Maybe a better question would be what type of bandura would there be the most beginner resources available for?
Anway, any and all advice would be much appreciated.
